To address a lack of investment in Washington, DC's urban forests, a local nonprofit organization strives to rejuvenate urban forests through picking up trash and combatting invasive species.
DC's Ward 8 neighborhood is home to some of the city's best natural landscapes. Unfortunately, it is also the city's most underserved and underfunded area. These two factors have created a problem: while there is abundant nature in Ward, 8, its residents are unable to enjoy it because of a lack of trails, an abundance of trash, and a wide range of invasive species. Ward 8 Woods is a local nonprofit whose mission is to tackle that problem.
As detailed in this short doc, the organization has removed over 1 million pounds of trash from Ward 8's forests. They have also improved the trail network and quelled the spread of invasive species. These efforts have improved access to nature for Ward 8's residents, which can translate to better mental and physical well-being.
